About a month ago, while coughing my lungs out on the third floor of our office building, my colleague insisted that A Perfect Story (2023) would be my new favourite romantic comedy.
She was not wrong. I binged it the following weekend and immediately wanted to text everyone I know to persuade them to watch it too. As I was running around my apartment scrambling to find my phone, I remembered that I have a newsletter now and can actually just email everyone instead.
A Perfect Story is Spanish romantic comedy miniseries based on a novel of the same name by Elísabet Benavent. It revolves around Margot and David, whose lives intertwine after Margot flees from her wedding and David is dumped by his girlfriend. They both embark on an elaborate scheme to get their ex-partners back and start catching feelings in the process.
I found this extremely watchable, so I won’t break your brains by trying to critically analyse it. Just know that if you’re looking for something to make you smile, this is the one.
Here are seven spoiler-free reasons you should watch A Perfect Story:
The sexual tension between the two leads is so palatable I could cut it with a knife. A Perfect Story is one of the few rom-coms I’ve seen where the protagonists actually feel like real people — there were some scenes where I genuinely felt like I was invading their privacy.
It’s really pretty. The colour-grading is so lovely and warm, injecting the show with classic 90s rom-com energy.
It’s not cringey, it’s charming! I find a lot of rom-coms cringey. This wasn’t!
The sub-plot is fun, and the dynamic between the three siblings was authentic and believable.
The title sequence is the cutest thing I’ve seen in a while.
The team definitely used editing and music to their advantage to add nuance to the plot. The storytelling is clever because of this and we even get to see glimpses of choices the characters could have but didn’t make.
It’s always fun to watch TV shows that are popular in other countries!
