PEN15 (2019)
I wish for you to know the love of a best friend. Maya and Anna know it deeply.
Pen15 is a comedy series created by Maya Erskine, Anna Konkle and Sam Zvibleman. It’s a little bit odd because Maya and Anna play the young versions of their middle school selves — even though they’re actually in their mid-30s — and all of the other kids in the show are actually thirteen years old.
I promise that after you get past the feeling of second-hand embarrassment, you’ll have a great time. From exploring Maya and Anna’s first crush to getting their first period and more, this show has so much heart and takes you right back to the 1990s.
Class of ‘07 (2023)
There’s barely any men in this show! Have I piqued your interest yet?
A disastrous apocalyptic flood hits Brisbane, Australia, during the 10-year reunion of an all-girls high school. The class of ‘07 group finds themselves trapped within their old high school campus and find creative ways to survive and seek help. In the meantime, old wounds and unresolved high school drama inevitably resurfaces.
If you have to pick one show from this list to watch, pick this! Every episode ends on a cliffhanger and the characters are so wonderfully complicated. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had watching a post-apocalyptic story.
Kim’s Convenience (2016)
Think Schitt’s Creek (2015) but a little more politically incorrect. My mother introduced this to me during winter break and I binged it all in two weeks.
Kim’s Convenience revolves around a Korean family and their convenience store in Toronto, Canada. My favourite part about this show is how realistically it depicts family dynamics between immigrant parents and their first-generation adult children. With its depiction of what it means to carve out your own space within modern-day Canadian society, this show will make you laugh and cry.
